Community Food Provision

The National Food Service London is a community-led, food justice organisation, that was set up at the beginning of the first lockdown to provide emergency food provision during the pandemic. I started volunteering with them in January 2021, delivering meals by bicycle and packing orders at Lea View Hall. This is a documentary record of the on-site volunteers’ work during the last couple of months of operation. There were many other people working remotely, coordinating the logistics and running the hotline service.

Moving forwards into summer 2021 and emergency food provision has wound down. National Food Service London is focusing on working with other food justice organisations and the wider mutual aid movement, to break the food waste cycle and end food poverty. They are now working collaboratively with the local community to build long-term support projects for people experiencing food insecurity. The following photos are from the Community Cooks training programme at Elizabeth House in Highbury. The participants are learning to cook large batches of meals with donated surplus food.
